Plant your spring garden now!

Did you know that you can have a spring, summer and fall garden here in Utah?  Right now you can begin planting peas, parsley, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and onions.  You can actually harvest these vegetables around the time you will begin planting your summer garden.  In each different 12” square of your square foot garden, you can plant  8 peas plants,  4 spinach plants,4 parsley, 4 leaf lettuce, 1 cabbage, 1 broccoli,16 onions, and  1 cauliflower.  That’s almost 40 vegetables in a 4’x4’ garden box.

A tip about lettuce:  you may have heard that lettuce does not do well here and tastes bitter.  That is only the case if you do not water it generously.  Leaf lettuce should be planted in the spring as it  does not like hot weather.   You can manage to keep it producing in the summer if you keep it shaded and watered well every day.  Leaf lettuce is a delicious necessity to those summer salad meals!

Gardening was never this easy!

There is a real attraction to simplifying work these days. How would it be if gardening could be made easy? Have you heard of square foot gardening? It is all the rage because it requires very little space, and doesn't use the long rows that are traditionally associated with growing vegetables. A box garden can be place about anywhere, even on cement!
